Getting the Best Shot at Removing Troublesome Insects

Posted by News Desk on 25th April 2011

Recently in a bathroom, the screams of a little girl were heard as tiny black specks were seen roaming around on the floor.  When the girl realized the ants would not hurt her, she calmed down.  When insects show up inside human homes, often the response is one of disgust and disdain, urging a need to eliminate them as quickly as possible.  Ants and bed bugs are two different creatures that can create problems in homes.  Without treatment, a home can become an environment hostile to the rightful owners, the humans.  While some ants are unlikely to bite people, there are other species of ants that offer painful bites.  In Canada, doing a search for ‘extermination fourmis‘ or ‘punasie de lit Monreal’ can offer many different options for a quality exterminator company.  Ants are often easier to exterminate than bed bugs.

Recently in the news, there have been numerous stories about bed bugs showing up in different urban areas.  Whether it is an apartment complex getting completely fumigated for an infestation, or a courthouse being cleared because bed bugs show up on the chairs, these tiny little bugs can wreak havoc where ever they are found.  Bed bugs cause painful bites that can look like a rash, but continue to occur as long as bed bugs survive in a home.  Bed bugs can be especially problematic in areas where homes are close together, like apartment complexes and condominiums.

Bed bugs have nests they retreat to after a feeding.  Nests can be as far as one hundred feet away from the location the bed bugs are found feeding.  The dwelling places of bed bugs can also be found in many different locations in a home, including crevices and other dark places behind picture frames, inside furniture, and used mattresses.  Bed bugs are not just found in human homes. They can live off of the blood of other species, like cats, dogs, and birds.  Rodents can also cause the spread of bedbugs.  Bed bugs are an increasing threat to the safety and comfort of families unlucky enough to get an infestation in their home.  These small creatures can go from any place within one hundred feet of their primary home to find warm blood to feed upon.  Just like tiny vampires, bed bugs will live for long periods between feedings and then attack anything that exhibits the signs of life, warmth, and carbon dioxide.

Garden Variety Sheds Can Be Very Useful

Posted by News Desk on 25th April 2011

Garden variety is coined term. It means the object being spoken of is common and unremarkable, not special.  There are more than a few things that might seem boring at the first look but can be exciting to understand after taking a better look at them.

Garden sheds are one thing that can be boring or beautiful to look at. What might be considered a typical garden shed in America will normally be referred to as a cabanon in Canada and France.  Modern storage sheds can be used for housing animals.  Sheds used as a shelter are normally termed as barns, a sheltering structure much larger than a shed.  A much smaller structure is often used for housing a single animal like a cow or a group of smaller animals like goats. Many sheds are made from weather resistant materials like plastic, vinyl, and aluminum.  There are still sheds constructed using materials like wood.  The sheds can then be finished with a weather resistant coating like paint or siding.

Sheds can be made from kits as well, even if the building materials are wooden, allowing simple basic building skills to erect the building, instead of hand cutting each piece of wood needed.  Sheds can be weather tight or simple structures that have one or more walls and a roof.  A wood shed for wood storage can also be a very simple structure, with just a roof protecting the wood from the elements.  This type of wood shed is not always made of wood, but houses wood that normally will be burned in a wood stove.

Wet firewood is very difficult to burn.  Storing wood in a dry location allows the wood to season and dry.  Dry wood provides a better fire for the family storing it.  There are many hay sheds without walls. They are simply a roof supported by poles to protect the hay from rain and snowfall.   Sheds that are made of metal are more likely to be damaged by high winds and should be attached to a concrete foundation with screws.  In cold climates, a metal shed is more likely to be damaged by a heavy accumulation of snow and ice which can also create rust if the owner does not take good care of the shed.  Dents are more likely, damaging the paint which leads to rust when moisture contacts the damaged metal.  Take care when selecting a material for shed construction.

Why You Too Should Consider Wrought Iron Curtain Rods

Posted by News Desk on 10th February 2011

It is always a lot of fun to redecorate a room.  You can shove the furniture around, buy new pillow cases, exchange rugs, and go shopping for new window treatments.  It is a lot of work, but the kind you really don’t mind. You know that once all the chores have been completed, you will have a completely different, beautiful, new room.

Many questions of a remodeling project revolve around window treatments. Blinds, drapery or curtains? It is never easy to decide, but curtains often win. They are still the number one choice. There are lots of amazing materials and patterns available and the decision should be easy.  That will be a piece of cake, but what about the curtain rods?

Today, there are almost as many hardware styles as there are window coverings. Should you buy wrought iron curtain rods, or stained wood?  The only way to find out which type to select is to take a few steps back from the window and envision how each particular hardware type would look on the wall. Would it blend in well with the room’s furniture, decorations, and accessories?

If you are uncertain, you can either ask a professional home decorator for advice, or you can go with wrought iron curtain rods. Why, you may ask?  The answer is simple. Wrought iron curtain rods are versatile, stylish and affordable. Iron drapery hardware always fits, regardless if your room has a futuristic flair, or is fit for a 1960s woman’s magazine cover. With the selection of iron curtain rings, swag holders and interchangeable rod ends, your wrought iron curtain rods are all you require to satisfy your current window decorating needs.

Thinking Critically About Energy Use in the Home

Posted by News Desk on 15th December 2010

During the high temperatures of the summer and the freezing climates of the winter, heating and cooling systems become extremely important.  However, as these systems become more important, power bills tend to go through the roof.  It’s important to learn how to save energy in order to protect the environment and your wallet.

One of the biggest reasons why air conditioning and heating in Phoenix and other places can be so pricey is because a lot of homes are not properly insulated, which leads to a lot of air leakage.  Older homes with single-pane windows and thin outside doors allow air to flow freely in and out, forcing your heating and cooling systems to work twice as hard.  Weatherizing your home is a smart move toward making your house more energy efficient.  There are government subsidies and tax write-offs that you can apply for in order to make insulating and updating your home more affordable.

In addition to weatherizing your home, you can reduce your energy consumption simply by thinking critically about it.  Instead of letting your heater or air conditioner run all day while you are away, turn it off for those hours, and you will see a drastic reduction in your energy bill. You can also be proactive by opening and closing window blinds at cold or hot parts of the day.  During the winter, close your blinds when it starts getting cooler in the evening, and keep the blinds open during the warmer afternoons. When it’s summertime, leave the windows open at night to allow cool breezes to cool down your home, but shut the blinds during the day so that the sun doesn’t beat in and warm everything up.

How Gutter Covers Can Block Debris and Leaves

Posted by News Desk on 22nd October 2010

Although they are simple aspects of the exterior of a home, rain gutters are vital to keeping a house looking nice and functioning correctly.  However, during the fall, rain gutters can become a pesky part of your day because of the massive amounts of leaves and debris that get caught in them.  One of the best solutions to keeping your rain gutters clean is to get a San Mateo gutter cover.

Gutter covers are simple in design, but complex in their function.  By installing gutter covers over your rain gutters, you can efficiently block everything but water from getting inside of the gutters.  No longer will you need to climb a rickety ladder to fish out the leaves, debris, and muck from your gutters.

Gutters can collect even more than your average leaves and plants.  Animals tend to lay nests in gutters because they are protected and moist.  Mold and mildew can also grow in gutters because of the moisture and bacteria, which can drastically reduce the lifespan of your gutters.  These are more pertinent reasons to have gutter covers installed all over your house.

In addition, if you are thinking about upgrading your current gutters because your old ones are old or rusty, consider upgrading to rubber gutters.  Many new companies out there have created attractive, sturdy, and rust proof gutters made out of hard rubber.  Not only will these rubber gutters last substantially longer than metal gutters, but they will also help move any debris trapped in your gutter down the gutter chute easier.

Taking The Steps To Save Our Planet

Posted by News Desk on 28th September 2010

Many people believe that this current green movement is the first of its kind for America.  However, in the 1970’s, the people of America were involved in an environmental movement that was just as big, if not bigger, than the one going on right now.  People realized that their precious earth was being destroyed by pollution, that they were using too many resources, that the food they were eating had harmful chemicals in it, and that corporations needed to be held accountable for their wrongful acts.  It started as a fad, become a movement, and then died out with time.

Today, we are experiencing a green movement incredibly similar to the one from the 1970’s.  More people are holding businesses to higher standards and more people are choosing to find ways to reduce their impact on the earth.  Although there are the few who take drastic measures to cut their impact down significantly, the majority of people do not have the time or will power to take such action.  The bulk of people try to reduce their impact with simple things like changing out regular bulbs for fluorescent ones and using clothes racks to dry their clothes.  An excellent way to reduce even more energy use in your home is to get your HVAC in Chicago checked out for leaks and problems.  Many HVAC companies out there can work on your heating and cooling machine to make it more environmentally friendly. The little things are what make big impacts.

Instead of letting this green movement pass by like it did in the 1970’s, let us all work harder to reduce our carbon footprint by making conscious efforts to save our planet.

Finding the Perfect Furniture Purchase

Posted by News Desk on 28th September 2010

One of the pleasures that adults find in life is picking out new furniture. As a kid, picking out new furniture would not seem all that exciting. In fact, it may even sound boring. However, when we become old enough to have a home or a place of our own and have enough resources to be able to purchase new furniture it becomes a lot more exciting.

Finding new furniture is often done by going to the largest furniture store in the area that everyone knows about. However, some of the most unique furniture and some of the best deals can be missed by doing it this way.

One way to find some of the places in your area that you might not know about is to do a search on the internet. For example, someone living in New Jersey may search furniture in Toms River if they live in that part of New Jersey. If someone lives in Lincoln Nebraska they may want to search for something like, Lincoln Furniture store. Looking on the internet is one of the best ways to find the hidden gem furniture stores in the area.

Furniture shopping is fun at the large stores but can be a lot more fun when that perfect piece of furniture can be found for a great price that cannot be found in the large stores that everyone else is shopping at. Getting it home and into that living room or bedroom can really top off the satisfaction of making the perfect purchase.

We all have to admit that life is wonderful and fine -until a plumbing issue comes around. Plumbing is what makes our little worlds inside our homes go around. When there is a leak, a fixture problem, clogged drains, clogged toilets, a water heater malfunction, piping breaks, or what have you, then the world inside slows down for a little while until it’s fixed. Bed Bugs in NYC Is a Stereotype That Is Underserved

Posted by News Desk on 17th September 2010

One of the worst things that can happen to you when you go to a hotel is to wake up and find out that you have had some little guest in your bed called bed bugs.  Bed bugs in NYC are a stereotype that may or may not be well deserved. The fact is bed bugs can be found in a lot of different places across the country, not just in New York.

Many people have no idea that bed bugs are a real bug that can be found in a bed. They can leave the worst sores on your body if you ever end up sleeping in a bed that has bed bugs. The old saying to not let the bed bugs bite has some real merit and history behind it.

Bed bugs in a hotel can be a business killer. It is important for hotels to realize what they can do to prevent bed bugs as well as what they can do to solve the problem if they do become invested with some bed bugs. For example, finding an exterminating company in the area and working with them on a regular basis is a must for any hotel. To find an exterminating company that will deal with bed bugs in the area you may want to do a search on the internet for something like, bed bugs in NYC. Of course, you would replace the NYC with the name of the town that you are in.
