LASIK – The Right Choice for the Right Condition

Posted by News Desk on 22nd April 2011

I was in the first grade when my eye problems were initially diagnosed. I was not aware that I had any problems seeing, my vision being good enough with basic eye exams not to require any kind of corrective procedures. Of course, at that age, being able to read the eye chart was more important than any real concern with my eyes, so whenever we had eye exams at school, we would try to see the chart beforehand and get an idea as to what the order of the letters was, or which way the forks were pointing, as the case may have been. I am sure that bluffing was one of the reasons it took a little while to be diagnosed. What tipped my parents off was a trip to California.

While driving with my grandparents through the Redwood Forest, I started to feel sick. At first, I thought I had the flu and tried to lay down in the car and go to sleep, which defeated the purpose to taking me through the forest. We finally did stop, and after a few minutes of being out of the car, I felt much better, only to have the symptoms return after we drove again for a little while. My parents figured out that I was car sick, and they knew that eye and ear problems were among the known causes for motions sickness, so when I got home, they scheduled an appointment for me.

Without the opportunity to cheat on the chart, it did come out that I had eye problems, most noticeably astigmatism. I was given the opportunity to pick out some frames, and in a few weeks, my glasses were ready. I did get used to them, but at first, I was bothered by the pain they put on my nose and ears. Plus, at that time, they were really made of glass, so they ended up getting broken a couple of times when we got too carried away on the playground.

When I was older, I learned about LASIK surgery and how it could correct astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia. I consulted with a doctor to see if I was a candidate for the surgery, and it was determined that I was, but only for one of my eyes due to corneal damage to the other. We discussed the pros and cons of the surgery, and I decided that it was a good option. I now have 20/20 vision in one eye, which compensates for the other. I can see clearly, and I am very happy.

Smokeless Cigarettes – Facts You Should Know About

Posted by News Desk on 11th February 2011

There is a lot of talk about smokeless cigarettes among tobacco smokers. It is a new type of cigarette that has been released. These smokes look like the real deal, feel like it, and have the same effect. So why do they attract so much attention?

Electronic or smokeless cigarettes are different from ordinary cigs, because they do contain nicotine, but no tobacco. When the users inhale, the nicotine is delivered directly to their lungs, bypassing the use of tobacco, tar and carcinogens (cancer-causing substances).

There are several differences between tobacco and smokeless cigs, aside from the fact that they are better for a smoker’s health. These battery-operated devices also make headlines because they are:

•    Accepted – Fake cigs are allowed in areas where regular cigarettes are banned. They can be lit in public places, restaurants, hotels, nightclubs, pubs, airports, etc.

•    Safer – Smokeless cigarettes function on batteries. There is no need for a lighter or matches. Without fire, the chances of starting a fire through a burning cigarette are slim to none.

•    Eco–friendly – Artificial cigarettes are a lot better for the environment. There is no harmful second hand smoke, and the devices produce less trash than their traditional counterparts.

•    Easy to adjust to – Switching to smokeless cigarettes can cause a temporarily slight ill feeling. This is the result of the body adjusting to the decrease of toxins, which are found in standard cigarettes.

•    Cheaper – Once the cost of the start-up kit has been recuperated, smokeless cigarette users will spend less and can start to enjoy big savings.

The lucky states out there that never actually have to experience the bitter cold of winter are only lucky when it’s winter everywhere else.  Once those summer months start rolling in around the country, the heat waves in the southern states like Texas, Arizona, and Florida can be so terrible that people can only come out at night or in the early morning hours.  This is why having properly functioning air conditioning in a southern home is so important to survival all year round.

Treatments Available At Spas

Posted by News Desk on 20th September 2010

A few months ago my husband came home from work just like any normal day.  But on this particular day there was a mischievous twinkle in his eye.  Something was up.  I noticed the corner of a piece of paper sticking out of my bag.  He had stashed something inside of it.  It was an envelope.  I tugged at the corner and pulled it out.  Inside was a certificate for a free two-hour full-body massage at a local day spa.  He knew just what I needed.  I was thrilled.  With certificate in hand, I called up the spa and made an appointment as soon as possible for my massage.

Day spas are the ideal location for a getaway close to home.  Spa treatments like facials, massages, and manicures and pedicures are a great way to pamper your body and your mind as well.  For those looking to benefit from a facial, there are many options available with specific purposes.  There are facials designed to assist in exfoliation or the removal of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin.  Other facials are designed to extract blackheads or whiteheads.  Acne facials are designed to help improve the skin of people suffering from severe acne.  There are also different styles of massages.  A deep tissue massage is one style of massage that focuses on relieving tension in the muscles located below the surface of the top muscles.  Full body massages, also known as Swedish massages, focus on relieving tension in every area of the body.  Residents of North Carolina looking for Outer Banks spas should try the Aqua Day Spa.

Sanitary Wipes and the Gym

Posted by News Desk on 17th September 2010

There are a lot of germs that we carry with us all over the place and all of the time. Most people  live in this environment and are fine with that and realize that this is just a part of life. However, some people become a bit carried away with their precautions against germs.

That being said, it is always a safe thing and well within reason to use some sanitary wipes to clean public surfaces that are touches a lot throughout the day, every day. This can help to keep germs from spreading from one person to the next in a rapid fire case that may cause a lot of problems for a lot of people.

One of the most popular places where germs can be found in the public is in the gym. In the gym there are a lot of people who are always sweating. The air is often humid, which can foster germs to grow and spread. It is the ideal situation for them and they can easily live in that environment.

One of the things that gym s do is use sanitizing wipes. However, at the gym they are often referred to as gym wipes. They are usually placed close to the machines and surfaces that are touched frequently by everyone so that you can wipe the surface down before and after you use the machine. This will help to keep the germs down to a minimum and prevent people from getting sick because of the spread of germs.

Sports Medicine to the Rescue

Posted by News Desk on 17th September 2010

We are becoming a more active nation.  Sport participation is on the rise in all levels of competition and all ages.  A dentist in town at age 45 is on a city soccer league; his son at age 5 is on a city soccer league.  Chances are the dentist will visit the sports medicine clinic in NJ long before his son does!  As older people participate in sports on a more regular basis, the chances for injury increases. This is not always due to the sports themselves, but often inactive people pick up sports without giving their bodies time to adjust to the new level of activity.  We have to work into the activity level slowly and not go from armchair quarterback to weekend warrior!

As American’s age, we are fighting “getting old.”  While exercise is fantastic for the body and fights almost every disease and ailment known to man, it also can be a problem in itself it not started slowly.  Starting at age 37 I ran three marathons in successive years.  I ended up with two stress fractures and multiple visits to clinic for sports medicine in NJ.  While running is great exercise, start slow, not too much, too fast or too often.  I still run, but I run in moderation.  There are marathon runners or all ages, weights and gender out there, but those that do the best are consistent.  They slowly build up their miles and do cross-training, strengthening all muscle classes together.  Everyone who wants to get involved should, start out walking and hiking, build up to more miles, more time and more endurance, and before they know it they will be running marathons, hiking the tallest mountains, playing soccer or tennis and all without a trip to the sports medicine clinic in New Jersey.

Chiropractors Giving Relief

Posted by News Desk on 17th September 2010

Chiropractors in NYC tend to view the body as a whole, with a strong belief that the body, given adequate assistance, can heal itself.  They also believe that most of the body’s ability to heal starts in the spinal chord.  The spinal column or nervous system is the key to good health; misalignment interferes with the nervous system and results in lower resistance to fight disease, injury, or illness.

Most chiropractors attend college for two years before they can apply to chiropractic school, but some states require a four-year degree first.  The emphasis of the bachelor or two year degree should be centered on nutrition, biology, science or other related fields.  Chiropractor school is usually an additional four years and all states require a state board examination before practice can begin.  Medical doctors obtain a bachelor degree also emphasizing the sciences of biology and then are admitted to a four-year degree followed by at least four more years of residency and further training.

NYC Chiropractors treat ailments with non-invasive treatments such as light, cold, heat, exercise, physical therapy and manipulation of the spine.  They offer no medication or surgical remedies.  With the belief that the body, given the opportunity to heal itself, will indeed do this, noninvasive remedies are the key to healing.  Medical doctors are more aggressive in treating the body and use medicine and surgery to fix what is wrong.  They have a thorough understanding of each system of the body and tend to view them separately.  They play a vital role in serious illnesses and trauma.

NYC Chiropractors are among a growing number of chiropractors across the nation helping people to heal, find balance in their lives, and turn to nutrition and exercise for help.  They view the body as a miracle that given the opportunity, can and will heal itself.

Coping with the Stress and Anxiety of Life

Posted by News Desk on 17th September 2010

Most people who struggle with anxiety or stress understand what aspects of their lives are causing these types of feelings, but they do not know how to deal with these hardships without some form of a synthetic drug.  Learning how to cope with and release stress is one of the most relieving and empowering things that a person can do, but knowing where to start can be challenging.

For people with minor cases of anxiety, soothing sports like yoga and Pilates can help to focus your mind on different, less stressful parts of your life.  Not only do these soothing sports center around meditation and self-reflection, but exercise in general releases endorphins that make you feel relaxed and at ease.  Along with exercise, eating right, getting enough sleep, and simply taking better care of your body will help you to heal and unwind.

A form of biofeedback called neurofeedback is a new development in holistic medicine that exercises the brain in a way that relaxes and changes your frame of mind. UR Wellness offers neurofeedback in Vancouver that targets the brain’s nervous system to begin a healing process for your entire body.

If anxiety and stress still persist, seeing a professional is the safest and most comforting way to seek guidance. Confessing to a personal acquaintance is not as effective as seeing a professional because the personal acquaintance has not been schooled in the correct procedures and may offer too much bias to actually help.  A professional counselor is a secure person to speak to who will offer you suggestions on how you can personally work on your anxiety.

Straight Teeth Lead to a More Confident You

Posted by News Desk on 17th September 2010

When two people decide to have a child, they always wish for their new baby to take on only the good genes from each side of the pair.  They want their child to have the beautiful hair from the mom or the nice nose from the dad.  Unfortunately, however, children can equally inherit the bad genes from one side of the couple such as the bad teeth from the father’s side.  Although crooked teeth are not a desired genetic trait, advances in orthodontics have made it simple and cheap for parents to get their child’s smile to sparkle.

The most common way to treat crooked teeth is with braces.  They are small brackets that are glued to each tooth, with a stiff wire that connects and corrects the teeth into a straight position. Denver orthodontists and orthodontists all over the country offer this very minimal and popular form of teeth correction.

If the child does not want metal bars strapped across his or her teeth for a good two years, there are other, less noticeable options.  Instead of having frontal braces, he or she can opt for lingual braces that are applied to the back of the teeth.  Although this form hides the braces in plain sight, it can affect the speaking and chewing abilities of the person, and can even cause more sores on the inside of the mouth.

One of the most exciting and innovative forms of teeth correction is Invisalign.  Invisalign is a clear, retainer-like mouth molding that fits over your teeth.  Although it is almost completely unnoticeable, many people say that it is the most uncomfortable type of teeth correction in the beginning stages because of the small fit the teeth must fit in.

Regardless of the type of teeth correction procedure you choose, straight teeth will lead to more confidence and a happier life.
