Thinking Critically About Energy Use in the Home

Posted by News Desk on 15th December 2010

During the high temperatures of the summer and the freezing climates of the winter, heating and cooling systems become extremely important.  However, as these systems become more important, power bills tend to go through the roof.  It’s important to learn how to save energy in order to protect the environment and your wallet.

One of the biggest reasons why air conditioning and heating in Phoenix and other places can be so pricey is because a lot of homes are not properly insulated, which leads to a lot of air leakage.  Older homes with single-pane windows and thin outside doors allow air to flow freely in and out, forcing your heating and cooling systems to work twice as hard.  Weatherizing your home is a smart move toward making your house more energy efficient.  There are government subsidies and tax write-offs that you can apply for in order to make insulating and updating your home more affordable.

In addition to weatherizing your home, you can reduce your energy consumption simply by thinking critically about it.  Instead of letting your heater or air conditioner run all day while you are away, turn it off for those hours, and you will see a drastic reduction in your energy bill. You can also be proactive by opening and closing window blinds at cold or hot parts of the day.  During the winter, close your blinds when it starts getting cooler in the evening, and keep the blinds open during the warmer afternoons. When it’s summertime, leave the windows open at night to allow cool breezes to cool down your home, but shut the blinds during the day so that the sun doesn’t beat in and warm everything up.

The Search for a Home

Posted by News Desk on 3rd December 2010

With interest rates at record lows and the housing market in its current state, there has never been a better time to buy a home.  It’s definitely a buyer’s market.  At least that’s what my husband and I kept hearing from our friends in the business.  For me, home ownership has always seemed like this unattainable goal that will only be reached when I’m older with several kids and a long career.  But that’s not the case.  Recently, my husband and I started looking at homes for sale just for fun, to see what was available.  But then we started to realize that with prices and interest rates as low as they are, affording a home wasn’t as unattainable as we thought.  Soon we began looking in earnest, but after taking a look at several houses, we realized we needed to backtrack and start our process where we should have started it to begin with.  We set up an appointment with a loan officer to pre-qualify for a mortgage and to find what our price range would be for buying a home.

Now with a price range in mind, we can safely look at houses for sale that fit into our budget.  Although our realtor has been helpful, we’ve found that the easiest way to search for potential homes is to look online.  With the help of real estate sites it’s easy to look up houses for sale in Salt Lake City and the surrounding areas that match our criteria for a potential home.  We’re confident that we’ll soon find the perfect house for us.
