Living In St. Louis, Missouri

Posted by News Desk on 30th November 2009

Known as the “Gateway to the West” because of the important role it played as a starting point for westward expansion, St. Louis, Missouri is a vibrant and diverse city that over 350,000 people call home.  Although it was settled in 1703 by French explorers, St. Louis wasn’t officially part of the United States until it was acquired by President Thomas Jefferson as a part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and then officially incorporated in 1822. Today St. Louis is a bustling and diverse city and a great place to live.

One of St. Louis’ famous landmarks is the Gateway Arch, an architectural bridge spanning 630 feet and standing 630 feet tall that was completed in 1965.  The Arch is a part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial park.  St. Louis is home to over 105 designated parks that serve families and communities in all areas of the city.  Other attractions to both tourists and residents are several museums, zoos, as well as sporting events, including professional baseball, football, and hockey teams.  St. Louis is also famous for its musical culture and is one of the early locations for the beginning of the jazz, ragtime, and blues genres.

St. Louis’ economy and education make it a great location for business professionals and students.  In fact, because of its great educational institutions and biotech corporations, the city is considered a prime location for medicine and biotechnology.  One visit to this vibrant and culturally diverse city might be enough to have the casual visitor looking for homes for sale in St. Louis, Missouri.

A Quick Look into a Reverse Mortgage

Posted by News Desk on 27th November 2009

The first question someone may have when considering a reverse mortgage is, “what exactly is a reverse mortgage.”  In basic terms, a reverse mortgage is a financial tool that people can use in retirement to exchange the equity in their home for retirement income.  Often times seniors who have reached retirement age, find that their retirement funds are inadequate.  Fortunately this same generation thought it smart to pay off their home.  A reverse mortgage allows them to leverage this equity to their advantage during retirement.  If they kept their home until their dying day without any type of reverse mortgage, the home would pass on to their beneficiaries.  In the case of a reverse mortgage, the bank would provide them with a pre-determined monthly income that they would receive throughout their retirement.  When a specified period of time was up, typically upon the death of those who receive the payments, the home becomes fully owned by the bank.  If there is any portion of the home that was not paid out to the owners, those funds then go to the beneficiaries.

While this strategy is probably not the best one to plan for during your income earning years, it allows those who need extra help to stay in their home, receive this money as tax free income, and have no limitations as to how the money is spent.  The largest amount allowable for Utah reverse mortgages is six hundred and twenty five thousand dollars.

Another question asked is whether this income causes a reduction in Social Security or Medicare benefits.  The answer is not it does not.

Some Of The Latest Trends in Bathroom Remodeling

Posted by News Desk on 26th November 2009

Instead of buying “up,” many American homeowners are choosing to stay put in their existing houses and making some much needed improvements instead. For many, having a master bathroom they can really enjoy is a high priority. Here are some of the latest trends in bathroom remodeling to spur your creative juices and get you thinking about some of the changes you’d like to make.

Heated floors

It’s hard to imagine anything more luxurious than getting out of the tub on a freezing cold wintry morning and stepping onto heated tile or wood floors. Radiant heat installed under master bath flooring is one of the most popular remodeling options out there. Electric radiant heating cables are easy to install and are cost-efficient as well. Most systems come with their own thermostats and in-floor sensors.

Double showers

No more taking turns in the shower in the morning! Many homeowners are taking out their bathtubs altogether in favor of creating an extra-large shower space complete with double showerheads. Today’s shower systems are much more extravagant than they used to be, making shower time a near-spa experience.

Private commode

Everyone likes a little extra privacy when they’re spending time on the loo. When doing a whole-bathroom remodel, you may want to consider creating a separate space for the toilet, complete with privacy door. It is not as difficult or as space-consuming as you may think, and such an addition will add lasting value to your home.

This is just a sampling of some the current trends in bathroom remodeling sweeping across the country. A good bathroom remodeling contractor will be able to give you additional ideas to transform your current space into a real showpiece. Finding the Right Investment Property

Posted by News Desk on 23rd November 2009

If you are looking for a way to gain a profitable investment that doesn’t involve the unpredictable ups and downs of the stock market, perhaps investing in a rental property is a good path to take if you think you are landlord material.  Investment rental properties, if properly handled, can be a great return on your investment and prove quite profitable.  But where do you find the ideal property?

One of the best ways to find great rental properties is to start building a network of information resources.  Most experienced real estate investors find their properties using a variety of methods, not just one. The best thing you can do is to develop genuine friendships with real estate agents, city hall clerks, or bankers, people who have inside information on the latest property news.  If you have a wide network of people in the industry, you are more likely to hear about available properties.  Look at ads in the paper for old For Sale By Owner properties that still haven’t sold or drive around looking for FSBO signs on homes.  A homeowner struggling to sell their home on their own might be interested in getting rid of their property quickly.  Check out bank foreclosure properties and real estate auctions for good real estate deals.  In order to make contacts and build your network of information resources, consider joining some kind of property owner or local landlord association.

The most important thing to remember is that you shouldn’t rely on just one method to find the right property.  The best way to find a good investment rental property is to expand your network of contacts through a variety of methods.

Hot New York City Holiday Hair Looks For 2009

Posted by News Desk on 20th November 2009

Ready or not, here come the holidays! It’s a magical time for New York City, with window displays ablaze, the Rockefeller Plaza tree all festooned in its finest: all capped off with an appropriate wintry nip in the air. It’s also party season in the Big Apple. If you want to really shine at all those family, friend, and office parties, here is a brief look at some hot holiday hair looks for New York City this year.

1. The Natural Look

If you like to wear your hair down, give it as unfinished a look as possible. Natural waves falling to shoulder-length give the look of a cascading stream. If you need help getting that boost of body and curl, loosely set your hair in vertical curls. Separate them with your fingers and fluff for a tousled, completely natural look and feel. For a dash of pizzazz, spray with a little glossing mist.

2. Go Sleek

No matter how you style your hair in the back, it’s hard to go wrong when the look from the front is completely sleek. There is nowhere else on earth where women are more chic than in New York, and the sleeker the look, the more chic you’ll be. The trick to this look is to use the right hair products that will give your hair both gloss and hold: then pull your hair back into a ponytail and style however you’d like.

3. The Loose Chignon

If sleek isn’t really your style, but you like the look of a simple updo, the loose chignon might be the choice for you. The bun can rest at your nape, mid-head, or up high: the choice is yours. Keep it loose and feminine, with absolutely no severity. The look is romantic and sweet: tumbling tendrils are a nice touch.

The best holiday styles start with a healthy head of hair and a terrific hair cut. If you are looking for a great hair salon in Brooklyn that will give you a brand new look for the New York party scene, visit the professional artists at Le Chandelier.

Acrylic Nails May Look Nice But Harbor Harmful Bacteria

Posted by News Desk on 19th November 2009

Several years ago, in 1997 and 1998, two nurses may have contributed to the deaths of 16 sickly newborn babies in an Oklahoma City hospital. The contributing factor was both nurses had long, acrylic fingernails. It was discovered that bacteria found under the nails was the same bacteria that caused fatal infections in the newborns. The CDC was called and reported that out of 439 newborns admitted during that period, 46 acquired the bacterial infection and 16 died. The study found evidence of an association between the bacteria and exposure to two nurses with long or artificial fingernails.

A study at the University of Michigan found that 73% of nurses in the study who wore fake nails had harmful bacteria on them. After hand washing, the number went down to 68%, which is not a huge reduction. The CDC recommended that healthcare professions keep nails short and trimmed which led to hospitals banning nurses from having long or fake nails.

The ridge between the real nail and the fake nail is a perfect place for bacteria to live and grow. This also creates a good place to invade the fake nail’s host if there is a small cut or abrasion in the area even if it is scrubbed clean. The crevice is so miniscule that washing will not rid the area of bacteria.

Keep your nails trimmed and clean for a healthier nail and better personal hygiene. Keep your nails moisturized and use a good nail hardener to fortify nail strength. Forego the fake nails if anything, for your health.
